Do most colleges require the ACT, or are there good test-optional schools?

I know some colleges are test-optional now, but do most still require the ACT? Trying to figure out if it's worth the time and stress to prep for it or if I should focus on other parts of my application.

It's understandable to feel conflicted about the role standardized tests play in college admissions. The trend in recent years has moved towards more colleges adopting test-optional policies, especially after the pandemic, which prompted many institutions to reevaluate the necessity of standardized tests like the ACT and SAT.

However, it's crucial to check the specific admissions requirements of the schools you're interested in, as policies can vary quite a bit. For highly selective schools, submitting competitive test scores can still bolster an application, even if they're test-optional. Conversely, for some less selective schools, strong grades and robust extracurricular involvement might carry more weight than test scores.

If your target schools are test-optional and you're confident in other areas of your application, you may consider focusing your energy there. Nevertheless, having an ACT score could be beneficial if it strengthens your application or if you're applying to schools where submitting a score is still expected.

That being said, balance is key; don't let test prep overshadow important extracurricular engagements or academic responsibilities. Use practice tests to gauge your potential performance and decide from there whether it's worth investing in more extensive prep.
