Skipping College for Military Duty at Wake Tech

Quick question, pals: Has anyone attended Wake Tech then paused their education to fulfill their military duties? How was the transition, and were there any unique challenges?

First off, kudos to you for thinking about serving your country; that's no small decision.

Many individuals follow a similar path and find the transition to be manageable, but it does certainly come with unique considerations. The key is to be prepared, and communication is critical. You should alert Wake Tech's Military and Veterans Services Office of your plans ahead of time, so they can best guide you through the process and avail you of any resources or support programs they have in place.

When you leave for military duties, your academic progress can be paused, it's not cancelled. The real challenge lies in the shift from student life to the more structured and disciplined lifestyle of the military, and then back again. Being in the military often means adapting to a different type of learning and a different type of lifestyle. However, this doesn't mean you can't excel in both environments. It's just an adjustment that you'll have to anticipate.

On your return, getting back into the academic mindset may take time, especially if there's been a significant gap. However, veterans often find that their military training can support their success in the academic environment – providing strong organizational skills, discipline, and a unique perspective.

Remember that Wake Tech also has support systems to help returning veterans. Connecting with them early and consistently will be a great way to transition back smoothly. They can help you with organizing course loads, accessing financial aid, and other aspects of easing back into college. They have likely faced similar situations before and should have strategies in place to help students in your situation. Stay positive, keep open lines of communication with your college, and don't hesitate to ask for help.

It's impressive to manage both military service and a college education, and it's something that can be done successfully with planning and the right support. Good luck to you!
