How does engagement look at HBCUs compared to other schools?

Hey everyone, I've been researching colleges and I'm pretty interested in HBCUs. I know the history and culture of these institutions are unique, but can anyone tell me about student engagement on HBCU campuses? Like, are there unique traditions or events that really make the experience stand out compared to other schools? I want to make sure I'll have a fulfilling college experience both academically and socially.

Hi there! My son is currently attending an HBCU, and he's shared quite a bit about his experiences. What stands out at HBCUs are the vibrant campus cultures and the strong sense of community and legacy. There are indeed unique traditions that thrive on these campuses, like homecoming events which are phenomenal and steeped in history with parades, step shows, and alumni gatherings.

The engagement doesn't stop at events; there's often a strong mentorship culture where alumni take an active role in supporting current students. Additionally, there are a plethora of student organizations that celebrate African American culture and history, something you may find less of at predominantly white institutions (PWIs). These can range from academic clubs to social societies, all of which bolster the communal feeling on campus.

For instance, my son joined the debate team, which has a legacy of competitive success and cultural pride. This has not only honed his public speaking skills but also deeply connected him with peers and mentors who share similar passions and backgrounds. From his experiences, it's clear that these institutions offer a unique social environment where students can feel a strong sense of belonging and empowerment. If you're looking for a place where you can be surrounded by history, culture, and a supportive community, an HBCU might just be a perfect choice!
