How do HBCUs differ from other universities in terms of culture and academics?

So, I've been thinking about my college list and Howard University popped up as a strong contender. Can anyone here shed some light on how HBCUs like Howard might differ from other non-HBCU schools in terms of academic and social life? I want to make sure I'm making an informed decision that aligns with my goals and values.

I'm glad to see you're considering a range of different institutions for your college experience. My child recently started attending an HBCU and the sense of community and cultural pride has been a significant highlight for them. In terms of culture, HBCUs often foster a supportive environment that celebrates African American history and culture, which can be empowering and affirming for students. Socially, there are numerous organizations and events that are deeply rooted in the African American experience, such as homecoming, step shows, and diverse Greek life.

Academically, HBCUs can provide a rigorous education with opportunities for research and leadership that are on par with other institutions. Howard, in particular, is known for its strong programs in areas like law, medicine, and the sciences, but with a smaller, more close-knit campus life. Professors often focus on not only academic excellence but also on preparing students to be leaders in the African American community and beyond. Keep in mind that each HBCU has its own unique atmosphere, so I'd suggest visiting the campus, talking to current students, and attending information sessions to get a real feel for Howard or any other HBCU that interests you.
