What's the deal with online AP courses for high school students?

Hey everyone, I've heard that taking AP courses can be a big boost for your college app, but my school doesn't offer many. I'm considering online AP classes. Has anyone done this, and if so, how do colleges view these? Are they as legit as the in-person ones? Plus, are there any you'd recommend that have a solid reputation?

Hey there! Great question – taking AP courses can indeed add to the rigor of your high school curriculum, which is something colleges look at. Online AP courses are seen as legitimate by colleges, especially if your school doesn't offer many APs or if you're looking to take courses in subjects not available at your school. What's most important is that you're challenging yourself with a rigorous curriculum, whether it's online or in person. Even more so, it will reflect positively on you that you are going above and beyond to further your education, so it's definitely worth doing if you think you can handle it!

As for recommendations, I'd suggest looking at AP courses from providers that have an established track record, such as Johns Hopkins CTY (Center for Talented Youth) or Stanford Online High School. The College Board also has a list of authorized AP course providers. Just make sure any online provider you choose is accredited and recognized by the College Board. It's also essential to do well in the course and on the AP exam, as the scores are part of what colleges consider. Lastly, balance your schedule – you want to push yourself but not to the point of being overwhelmed. If you're aiming for top colleges, remember they look for deep involvement in a few areas over a scattergun approach. Best of luck with your courses!
