How lgbt-friendly are the colleges out there?

Yo everyone, I'm part of the LGBTQ+ community, and I'm really wanting to find a college that supports and accepts that. I've heard stories about some colleges being more accepting and some being less. Any tips on how to find the most friendly schools? Thanks!

Hello! You've brought up an important aspect of college life. It's essential to feel safe, supported, and included in the community you choose to be part of for your college years. It's not just about acceptance, but also about proper support systems and community-building initiatives.

There are plenty of LGBTQ-friendly college campuses across the United States. Here's how you can go about looking for one:

1. Look for an active LGBTQ+ Student Center or organization: These places will be a hub of support, services, and community activities, which can be a good indicator of the college’s commitment to inclusivity.

2. Campus Pride Index: Campus Pride is a national nonprofit organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create safer, more LGBTQ-friendly colleges and universities. Their website provides a helpful tool, the Campus Pride Index, that rates colleges based on their inclusivity and support for LGBTQ+ students.

3. Consider the geographic location: Unfortunately, some states and regions are more accepting and progressive than others. A city like San Francisco or New York might be more LGBTQ-friendly than others.

4. Check if they offer gender-inclusive housing and restroom facilities: This is another indicator of how much a school accommodates and supports its LGBTQ+ students.

5. Ask current students: If you have the opportunity, try to reach out to current students or recent alumni. They can offer valuable firsthand insight into the campus culture, as acceptance can be a subjective feeling that isn't always encapsulated by the more objective metrics listed above.

6. Lastly, review the college's nondiscrimination policy: The institution should explicitly state that they don't discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. While the vast majority of schools have such a policy, there are some religious schools that expect students to only participate in heterosexual relationships.

Remember, you're looking for a place where you can be your authentic self and feel supported in your growth. So take your time, do your research, and I'm sure you'll find a great place to call your home for the next few years. All the best!
