New York is on top of my list for college destinations, and I'm really committed to attending a college with a diverse student population. Which NY colleges should I be looking at in terms of student diversity?
There are several colleges in New York known for having a diverse student population.
CUNY schools like The City College of New York (CCNY), Baruch College, and CUNY Queens College are known for their high racial and ethnic diversity, as well as international students' presence. Many students at these schools come from various countries, racial backgrounds, and socioeconomic statuses.
New York University (NYU) is another example of a diverse institution in terms of ethnicities, nationalities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. NYU has a high percentage of international students which amplify its cultural diversity.
Stony Brook University, part of the SUNY system, is also notable for its diversity. It was ranked in the top 20 for ethnic diversity by U.S. News, and more than a third of its undergraduate students identify as part of an ethnic/racial minority.
Finally, Columbia University, an Ivy League institution, also fosters a fairly diverse environment. Its location in New York City means that students have exposure to an extraordinarily mixed city outside the classroom. The university itself also focuses on encouraging diversity and inclusion in its student body.
Remember that diversity can come in many forms - race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, geography, major, extracurricular interests, and others. As you're researching schools, I'd also keep that in mind.
