Which high school courses should I focus on if I'm undecided about my college major?

Hello friends! I'm a junior and currently trying to figure out my schedule for senior year. I'm undecided on my college major and wondering what courses I should be taking now to keep my options open. How important is it to take AP or advanced courses in a broad range of subjects, or should I just focus on areas I enjoy more? Any tips would be great!

Your question is a thoughtful one and it's great that you're planning ahead for your senior year schedule. When you're undecided about a college major, it is beneficial to have a well-rounded academic background. This approach keeps a wide array of options available to you as you continue to identify your interests and strengths.

AP and advanced courses can demonstrate your willingness to challenge yourself academically, which is something colleges look for. It's also a good way to earn college credits, potentially saving time and money in the future.

However, don't underestimate the importance of enjoying what you're learning. You tend to perform better in subjects you're passionate about, which can bolster your GPA and make you a more attractive candidate to colleges.

It would be wise to have a mix of rigor across core academic areas while allowing yourself a couple of classes in subjects that you're particularly interested in or good at. For example, if you love history, taking AP US History could serve both your interests and the rigor colleges are looking for.

Remember, while AP courses are a strong indication of rigor, they are not the only way to demonstrate academic strength. Colleges will look at your overall performance and the context of the available courses at your school. Good luck with your decisions!
