How do colleges view International Baccalaureate courses during admissions?

Hi folks, I'm a junior in the IB program and I'm starting to look into colleges. Do admissions offices regard IB classes as the same, more favorable, or less favorable compared to APs or dual-enrollment classes?

Hello! Your participation in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program is seen in a very positive light by admissions committees. IB courses are recognized globally for their rigor and depth. They are considered at least on par with, if not more favorable than, APs due to the IB's emphasis on critical thinking and its comprehensive curriculum.

Dual-enrollment classes are also valued, especially when they are taken at a local college and demonstrate your ability to handle college-level coursework. However, the perceived rigor of dual-enrollment courses can sometimes depend on the post-secondary institution where the courses are taken.

As you continue with your IB coursework, focus on earning strong grades and aim for a high IB score. Colleges do appreciate the depth of study and the global perspective that the IB diploma offers. Make sure that your involvement in the IB program is just one component of your application, complemented by extracurricular achievements, strong essays, and test scores that align with your target schools. Best of luck on your college journey!
