Military College Scholarships for Dependents

Hey folks, hitting you up with a bit of a personal question. My dad served in the military, and I’m considering following in his footsteps. I've heard about scholarships for dependents of military personnel. Can anyone shed some light on how these work, who's eligible, and how to apply?

Certainly, there are a number of scholarships specifically for dependents of military personnel, designed to support the education of the children and spouses of those who have served. Many organizations, as well as the federal government, offer scholarships due to their recognition of the sacrifices made by military families.

One popular scholarship is the Military Dependents Scholarship (MDS) which, in addition to other criteria, requires you to be a dependent child or spouse of an Arkansas veteran who has been declared to be 100% totally and permanently disabled due to service-related causes by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Another option is the Scholarships for Military Children Program. This program gives out $2000 scholarships to children of active duty, reserve/guard, or retired military commissary customers. It's based on academic merit, participation in school and community activities, leadership, and other factors, not on financial need.

Another federal scholarship you may be aware of is the GI Bill, it works by transferring benefits from parents to children. The Post 9/11 GI Bill allows service members to transfer unused benefits to their dependents. Veterans or actively serving military personnel can transfer benefits to their children, provided they have served for at least 6 years, and agree to serve 4 more.

However, it's important to note that each scholarship has specific eligibility requirements and deadlines. You’ll generally need to demonstrate strong academic potential, fill out an application, possibly write an essay, and provide documentation of your parent’s military service. Make sure to check the individual scholarship websites for accurate and complete information on how to apply.

In addition to these, many universities, nonprofit organizations, and private companies offer scholarships specifically for military dependents as well. Plug into resources like the financial aid office at your prospective college for tailored advice on how to apply for scholarships for military dependents.
