How does the military college system work?

I've been wondering, are military colleges similar to regular universities but with a focus on military training? Or is it a completely different system? Can somebody please explain?

Military colleges do provide many of the same academic courses and degrees as traditional colleges and universities. However, they also provide the unique opportunity to learn leadership, discipline, and other military values while also offering traditional education. Just like in regular universities, students at military colleges also obtain a degree in a specific field of study, such as Engineering, Science, or Liberal Arts.

There are three types of U.S. military colleges: Federal Service Academies, Senior Military Colleges, and the Corps of Cadets Program at civilian universities.

Federal Service Academies, like the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), the U.S. Naval Academy, and the U.S. Air Force Academy, are federally funded institutions where students receive a full scholarship in return for a service commitment after graduation. This commitment typically lasts at least five years. Admissions to these schools are extremely competitive and require a congressional nomination.

Senior Military Colleges, like Virginia Military Institute and The Citadel, are four-year colleges that are notably military in character, but unlike the federal service academies, they do not require a service obligation after graduation (though many graduates choose to commission).

Lastly, there are also Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs offered at numerous civilian universities across the country. These programs allow students to attend a traditional college while participating in military education and training. After graduation, students who are in ROTC are then commissioned as officers in the U.S. military, with a specified period of obligated service.

Each of these types of military colleges has a distinct structure, but they all combine elements of traditional academic study with military training, values, and discipline.
