IT Jobs: Military Experience vs College Degree

Hey, I'm interested in heading into IT after high school. I've been debating between pursuing military experience which could lend me some practical knowledge or going straight for a college degree in IT. What does the IT field value more - military experience or a college degree?

For those venturing into the IT field, it's not a question of whether a military background is more valued than a college degree or vice versa. Both pathways can provide valuable experiences and skills that could be beneficial in the IT industry.

A college degree can provide a strong groundwork in various areas of IT, with the development of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in specific domains such as computer science, software engineering, data analysis, and cybersecurity, among others. By going through a structured program, you'll also be exposed to a more diverse set of information. Additionally, internships, network connections, and recognition from accredited institutions provided by a college degree could be highly useful for job prospects.

On the other hand, military experience can provide practical, hands-on experience. For instance, the U.S. military offers numerous training programs in fields such as network administration, cybersecurity, and satellite communications that are directly relevant to certain areas of IT. This could potentially fast-track your progression into certain roles. Moreover, the discipline, work ethic, leadership experience, and problem-solving skills gained from a military background are qualities that employers, not just in IT, value highly.

In many cases, employers are not interested strictly in the route you've taken, as much as in the skills and experiences you bring to the table. Additionally, obtaining certifications such as CompTIA, Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals, or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) can also bolster your resume, regardless of the path you choose. My suggestion would be to choose the path that aligns best with your tastes, aspirations, and circumstances.
