What do college athletes usually major in?

Hey folks, hope you're all doing good. I'm preparing to apply for colleges combined with a potential sports scholarship. I'd love to know, what are the common majors that college athletes opt for? I'm trying to find a balance between my sport and academia.

Hello! It's awesome that you're considering the balance between academics and athletics, as both are important aspects of your college experience.

College athletes often major in a range of disciplines just like other students; there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer to this question. However, some majors tend to be more popular among student-athletes due to their flexibility and compatibility with training schedules.

For instance, disciplines like Sports Science, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology or Physical Education can be common choices, given their direct relevance to athletic pursuits. Business, Communications, and Sociology are also often favored because of the skills such as teamwork, leadership, and critical thinking that they involve and which are transferable to many career fields.

Many athletes also pursue majors in Interdisciplinary Studies or General Studies, as these often allow for greater course flexibility. This can be beneficial because athletic training and competition schedules can be demanding.

One thing to note is that while it's important to choose a major that can accommodate your athletic commitments, you should also consider what you're interested in studying academically and where you see your career going after college or post your athletic career.

It can be helpful to talk with academic advisors, as well as current or former student-athletes in your potential field(s) of interest, to get their perspectives and advice. Additionally, be sure to investigate the support systems that the colleges you're considering have in place for student-athletes, such as tutoring or academic advising focused on helping you balance school and sports. Good luck with your applications!
