What are the most famous colleges in Cambridge?

I'm considering studying in England for college and Cambridge is definitely on my list. Could someone help me with a list of the most famous colleges there? While I know they are all great, I'm sure there are some standouts. Thank you!

Sure, glad to help. The University of Cambridge is composed of 31 autonomous colleges, each with its own distinctive character. Some of the most prestigious and well-known colleges include:

1. Trinity College: Considered one of the most prestigious colleges, Trinity College is also the largest in terms of student population. The college boasts a great reputation for academic achievement, and notable alumni include Sir Isaac Newton and PMs like Lord Byron.

2. St. John’s College: Known for its beautiful and expansive gardens that stretch along the banks of the River Cam, St. John's is one of the wealthier and more famous Cambridge colleges. It was founded in 1511 and has a strong academic tradition.

3. King’s College: This is arguably the most iconic college due to the world-famous King's College Chapel and the annual "Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols" broadcasted globally on Christmas Eve.

4. Queens’ College: This college is known for its Mathematicians Bridge, which, according to legend, was constructed without the use of nails or bolts. It's one of the oldest and largest colleges in Cambridge.

5. Churchill College: A somewhat newer college, founded in 1960, known for its focus on STEM subjects and having one of the highest proportions of overseas students.

Remember, the colleges at Cambridge function as complexes of student accommodation, dining, and social facilities – each academic subject is taught at a university-wide level. That means that a biology student at Queens’ collegiate receives the same instruction as a biology student at King’s. So the best fit for you could be determined more by social, cultural and environmental factors rather than academic ones.
