Which HBCU psychology graduate programs should I consider?

I'm in the process of researching colleges and I've always been intrigued by the prospect of attending an HBCU. Does anyone know which HBCUs have highly regarded graduate programs in psychology? I'll be applying to undergrad programs soon but I want to keep my eye on the future too. Any insights would be super helpful!

Hello and thank you for reaching out with your question! Looking ahead at graduate programs even before you start undergrad is a commendable approach as it can help you set long-term educational goals. To answer your question, several HBCUs offer reputable graduate programs in psychology.

For instance, Howard University in Washington, D.C. has a well-respected Ph.D. program in psychology which focuses on research and clinical training, especially within the urban and minority populations. Additionally, you might consider Clark Atlanta University in Georgia, which offers a Master's program in psychology with unique research opportunities.

Furthermore, Jackson State University in Mississippi provides both a Master's and Specialist degree in School Psychology, which might be appealing if you're interested in working within educational settings.

Each of these programs has distinct focus points, so it would be wise to research them based on your current interests in the field of psychology—be it clinical, experimental, or school psychology. Keep an open mind, though, as your interests could well shift once you get a broader exposure to the field of psychology in college!

Best of luck with your undergraduate applications and future endeavors in the field of psychology at an HBCU!
