What are the general admission requirements for HBCUs?

As a junior, I'm looking into what different colleges are looking for. I'm especially curious about HBCUs. Does anyone know what the general admission requirements are like for HBCUs? Like GPA, test scores, extracurricular involvement, etc.?

While admission requirements can vary significantly from one HBCU to another, most of them will consider your GPA, standardized test scores (ACT/SAT), and the rigor of your high school curriculum. Historically, many HBCUs offer a supportive environment with a focus on helping students who may not have had access to advanced preparatory resources. This often translates to more flexible admission criteria compared to some other institutions.

As for GPA, HBCUs typically look for solid academic performance. A GPA of 2.5 or higher is a common baseline, but more competitive HBCUs may expect higher GPAs. Regarding test scores, some HBCUs are test-optional. However, for those that do consider scores, aiming for the national average (around 1060 for SAT or 21 for ACT) can be a good benchmark.

When it comes to extracurriculars, they are certainly important but they don't need to be exceptional for many HBCUs. Leadership roles or active involvement in a few activities related to your interests can strengthen your application. If you have specific HBCUs in mind, it’s a good idea to review their admission pages or talk to their admissions offices directly for the most accurate information.
