How common are test-optional policies at HBCUs?

As someone who doesn't test well, I'm exploring test-optional colleges. I really admire the history and mission of HBCUs. Does anyone know if HBCUs are generally test-optional or if there's a growing trend of HBCUs adopting these policies?

Hello there! That’s a thoughtful approach to align your college search with institutions that resonate with your values. The trend towards test-optional admissions policies has been growing, and this includes many Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). In fact, quite a few HBCUs have recognized the limitations of standardized tests and have thus shifted to test-optional policies, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For example, Howard University, one of the most prominent HBCUs, has adopted a test-optional policy for the next few admissions cycles. As test-optional often means the school will consider scores if you choose to submit them, it’s still a good idea to check each school’s policy individually as some may still recommend test scores or require them for certain programs or scholarships. A visit to the admission pages of HBCUs you're interested in will provide the most up-to-date information on their policies. Wishing you all the best on your application journey!
