What to expect when trying out for an HBCU dance team?

Okay, so I’ve been dancing since I was 5 and I'm totally set on joining a dance team in college. I've seen some incredible performances by HBCU dance lines and I'd love to be a part of that culture and energy. Does anyone here have experience with auditioning for a dance team at an HBCU? I'm curious about what the tryouts entail, how I should prepare, and what the teams generally look for in a dancer. Any insight?

That's wonderful that you're keen on continuing your passion for dance at an HBCU! HBCU dance teams are known for their high energy, precision, and often incorporate styles like majorette and hip-hop. Auditions can be quite competitive and rigorous. Generally, you can expect auditions to include learning and performing choreography, demonstrating technique and possibly a freestyle portion to showcase your individual style and personality. Preparation-wise, focus on your physical fitness, as the routines are usually demanding, and work on your ability to quickly learn and perform choreography.

To stand out, teams often look for dancers who not only have technical skill but who also perform with confidence and charisma. They want dancers who can be ambassadors for the school spirit and traditions. Make sure you convey your enthusiasm and show that you are a team player who can also bring something unique to the table. I suggest reaching out to the dance team coach for specific advice, and if possible, attend a dance camp or workshop where you can get a feel for the style and expectations of the team. Best of luck with your auditions – I'm sure your dedication and experience will shine through!
