How to maximize high school experience?

Hey guys, I'm currently a sophomore and I'm trying to figure out what I can do to really maximize my high school years. Does anyone have any advice on clubs to join, classes to take, or things to do that'll not only improve my college apps, but also give me a valuable high school experience?

Hey there! Great question and it's awesome to see that you're thinking both about the college admissions process, and also about how to make the most out of your personal high school experience.

In terms of classes, colleges are very interested to see that you're pushing yourself academically while also performing well. This balance can be tricky, but it's key to making a stand-out application. Opt for more rigorous courses like honors, AP, or IB, if they are offered at your school and you think you can handle them. For instance, if you excel in the sciences, taking AP Biology or AP Chemistry could be great options.

Next, let's talk extracurriculars. These play a key role in your application as they speak volumes about your interests and dedication. I'd recommend becoming familiar with the 4 Tiers of Extracurriculars? If you have the chance, aim for those Tier 1 and Tier 2 activities. Being a part of a school club, a sports team, or student government could align with the Tier 3, and it's a great chance to showcase your leadership skills. Think about what interests you have and how you could engage with them in a meaningful way in your school or community.

This brings me to community service. Colleges love students who have demonstrated a commitment to enhancing their communities. It could be anything from volunteering at a local shelter, organizing a charity event, or even starting a mentorship program at a local elementary school.

But remember, the main point is to enjoy high school and immerse yourself in things you love. High school is not just about preparing for college, it's about finding your interests, making friendships, and creating memories. Don't stress too much over the future and make sure to take some time for relaxation and fun!

These should create a valuable high school experience both personally and as you prepare for college. Good luck!
