How do HBCU Army ROTC programs compare to those at non-HBCUs?

Hi everyone! I'm super interested in both serving my country and experiencing the rich culture of an HBCU. I’d like to hear from anyone who's done ROTC at an HBCU. How do these programs compare to ROTC programs at PWIs, especially in terms of opportunities and support? Do you feel it has affected your career prospects in the military?

Hello! My nephew completed their ROTC program at an HBCU, and from what they shared, the experience was deeply enriching. The ROTC program at HBCUs often bolsters a strong sense of community and pride due to the shared cultural and historical context. This can lead to a close-knit group that supports each other academically and personally.

In terms of comparing ROTC at HBCUs to PWIs, the core ROTC curriculum is broadly the same, as it's standardized across the country, but the social experience may differ. Opportunities and support would be very similar, though HBCUs might offer a unique network and perspective that could be beneficial in a military career.

My nephew found that their HBCU ROTC experiences provided them with a unique leadership perspective that was valued in their military career. When considering career prospects, it's less about where you completed your ROTC program and more about your performance and the connections you make during your training. The military values leadership, service, and commitment, which can be found and developed at both HBCUs and PWIs. I believe the important part is choosing a program that aligns with your goals and where you feel most at home. Good luck!
