Can being in a gospel choir, specifically an HBCU gospel choir competition, stand out on college apps?

I've been a part of my school's gospel choir for the past three years, and we're prepping for an HBCU gospel choir competition. Does anyone know if this is something that can make my application stand out? It's been a major part of my high school experience and I want to express that passion to colleges, but I'm not sure how much weight it holds in the admissions process. Super grateful for any advice!

Your involvement in the gospel choir, especially if it's a significant commitment for you, is definitely worth highlighting on your college applications. Passion often shines through when students discuss activities that are meaningful to them. Participating in an HBCU gospel choir competition not only shows your dedication to the choir, but also gives you a unique connection to an important cultural aspect that may be particularly valued at diverse institutions.

If this competition results in any recognition or awards, that could fall under Tier 2 or Tier 3 of the Extracurricular Tiers, which are looked upon favorably by admissions committees. For more on the 4 Tiers of Extracurricular Activities, check out this CollegeVine article: https://blog.collegevine.com/breaking-down-the-4-tiers-of-extracurricular-activities/

When describing this activity in your applications, be sure to articulate the depth of your involvement, any leadership roles, and the impact the choir has had on your personal growth or your school/community. These details can greatly enhance the way your extracurriculars are perceived. Good luck with the competition, and I'm sure colleges will appreciate reading about your experiences and passion for music!
