Popular College and University Plays: Where to Look?

Hello folks, I’m really into theater and I was wondering about the most frequently produced plays at colleges and universities. How can I find this information? And why might certain plays be more popular at the college level? Would it be cool to bring up my passion for theater in my essays if I've performed these particularly popular plays? Thanks much!

Hello!

There isn't a universal list of the most frequently produced plays at colleges and universities. However, you could try to look at individual college theater programs' past season lineups to see if there are any patterns. Another approach would be to connect with theater departments at various institutions you're interested in and ask about their upcoming and past productions.

Certain plays might be more popular at the college level due to various factors. These might include the relevance of the play's themes to contemporary issues, the play's appropriateness for the age group of college students, the play's cast size (especially if the theater department is large), or the play's complexity and educational value in terms of its capacity to challenge students artistically and intellectually.

Definitely, talking about your passion for theater in your application essays would be great! This not only shows that you have a passion and dedication but also gives active insight into how you might get involved on campus. You could highlight the roles you've played, how you learned from these experiences and how they shaped you as an individual. If you've performed plays that are popular at the college level, pointing out the intricacies of your understanding and interpretation could demonstrate your capabilities and engagement with the material to admissions.

Just ensure that your essay focuses not just on your experiences but primarily on your personal growth and takeaways from these experiences. That tends to give a more solid glimpse of who you are and what you've learned and grown from in your theater journey.

Best of luck with your applications!
