Women in Shooting Sports

Hi there, I'm really into shooting sports and I'm looking for colleges that support these activities as part of their athletic program. Are there any colleges that have shooting teams, with mostly women players? I feel this sport needs more representation, so I want to be a part of a community that encourages that!

Absolutely, it's a great idea to continue your involvement in shooting sports at the collegiate level. There are indeed several colleges that have collegiate shooting sports teams, and while they generally don't have exclusively women's teams due to the mixed-gender nature of the sport, they do actively encourage and support women participants.

Some of these colleges include Yale University, University of Kentucky, University of Alaska - Fairbanks, Texas Christian University, and West Virginia University. These schools have highly competitive shooting teams. In fact, many of these teams frequently send female shooters to the national and even international competitions.

Texas Christian University (TCU) in particular is notable for having one of the top NCAA Division I shooting teams in the country. They are often recognized for their competitive success and for the number of women participating.

In addition, there's a national organization that encourages female participation called the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF). They have female divisions in both the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP).

I should note that, at some schools, rifle teams are NCAA recognized, meaning they can potentially offer athletic scholarships. Schools that don't have NCAA recognized teams may still have club shooting sports, which still often offer a high level of competition and camaraderie, but might not offer athletic scholarships.

Your interest in promoting women's involvement in the shooting sports is commendable! Clubs and collegiate teams always benefit from members who are enthusiastic not just about the sport, but also about broadening its appeal. Consider reaching out directly to college shooting sports programs to ask about their commitment to female participation - coaches and team members would likely be eager to share their experiences and perspectives. Good luck in your search!
