How does attending an HBCU, like Howard or Spelman, influence my college experience compared to non-HBCU institutions?

Hey everyone! I'm super curious about how the atmosphere and opportunities at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) might differ from those at other colleges. For those who've experienced it or know someone who has, could you share what makes HBCUs unique? Looking for insight into social life, networking, support systems, and anything that can help me decide if an HBCU is the right fit for me.

Hey there! My daughter is currently a sophomore at Spelman, and I can share a bit of what she's told me about her experience.

HBCUs have a rich cultural heritage and a strong sense of community that is really distinct. She loves that the school celebrates African American history and culture which is interwoven into the curriculum and campus events. The networking opportunities are fantastic, as HBCUs tend to have strong alumni networks that are very supportive of current students. Career fairs and workshops often bring in successful professionals who are also HBCU grads, providing valuable mentorship opportunities.

Social life is vibrant and includes numerous cultural and Greek life events that are unique to HBCUs. My daughter feels a real sense of belonging and support, academically and personally. Professors and staff are typically very invested in student success, creating an environment that is nurturing and empowering. She's also found that the smaller class sizes at her HBCU have allowed her to form closer relationships with her professors and classmates, which enhances both her learning experience and her social life.

It's a tight-knit community, and she feels that attending Spelman will have a lasting positive impact on her professional and personal life. Hope this helps with your decision!
