What are the photography programs like at HBCUs?

I'm a junior really passionate about photography and I'm starting to look at colleges. I want to support HBCUs and also get a strong education in photography that will prepare me for a career. Does anyone know how the photography programs at HBCUs stack up? Are there any that have strong connections to the arts industry, or offer special opportunities like internships or unique courses?

It's wonderful that you're looking to combine support for HBCUs with your passion for photography. Many HBCUs offer robust arts programs, and a few stand out for their unique opportunities in photography. For example, Howard University in Washington D.C. has distinguished graduates and strong industry connections, particularly in journalism and the arts which can be beneficial for photographers. Also, consider checking out Spelman College, which has a well-regarded art program and outstanding connections with the arts community.

While searching, inquire about the curriculum to see if it covers both traditional and digital photography, look into the faculty's background, and definitely ask about internship opportunities. Many schools have partnerships with local art galleries, media companies, and community organizations which provide valuable hands-on experience. Don't hesitate to reach out to the admissions offices of the HBCUs you're interested in; they can give you specific information about coursework and partnerships. Remember that if you are able to visit campuses, that can also give you a great sense of the facilities and resources available to photography students.
