How do HBCUs support diversity on campus?

Quick question about campus life! I'm all about embracing diversity, and I'm curious – what sort of initiatives or programs do HBCUs have in place to promote a diverse and inclusive environment on campus? Do they have any unique approaches to diversity compared to PWIs (Predominantly White Institutions)?

Hey there! Great question! My kiddo is at an HBCU right now and the campus vibe around diversity is truly something special. HBCUs have a long-standing commitment to empowerment and inclusion, a part of their historical mission.

One unique aspect is that the student body at my child's institution, and many others, includes a mix of not just African-American students but also folks from all sorts of backgrounds, including international students. There are cultural heritage celebrations, mentorship programs, and alliances with other minority-serving institutions which really widen the scope of diversity. Also, many HBCUs have seen a broader array of students in recent years, and they're proactive about creating an inclusive environment for everyone — for example, through diversity workshops and speaker series that address various cultural and social issues. Not to mention, the classroom discussions are rich in varied perspectives which is an education in itself.

From what my child tells me, this blend of historical roots and modern inclusivity really makes HBCUs stand out. I've been impressed with the support and the familial atmosphere on campus which seems quite different than the approach at some PWIs, where diversity initiatives sometimes feel more like checkboxes than genuine community building. Hope that helps!
