D1 HBCU Track and Field

Trying to max out my potential in track and field while also getting the HBCU experience. I’m looking for info on D1 HBCU schools with solid track programs. Also, any insights on their athletic scholarships? How supportive are the coaches and faculty with athletes’ academic commitments?

As a starting point, Howard University and North Carolina A&T State University have reputable Division I track and field programs. In terms of scholarships at HBCUs, like at other institutions you'll generally find that athletic scholarships vary based on the program's funding and your ability level. Full rides are quite rare, but partial scholarships could certainly be on the table.

I definitely recommend reaching out to the coaches directly for the most accurate info on scholarships—it's part of their job to be upfront about what's available to potential recruits. Balancing academics and athletics, could be another thing to discuss with coaches, as generally both they and faculty will be truly understanding of your dual commitments, but they may have certain expectations or advising programs to ensure you're staying on track (no pun intended) academically, which you'll want to be aware of.

Athlete academic support services at these schools are often tailored to help you manage both your sport and schoolwork. They could range from helping you schedule classes around practice times to providing tutoring — this is definitely a question to ask when you contact the schools.

Overall, though, coaches know you're not just there to compete but to earn a degree as well. Of course, it's a two-way street; you'll need to stay on top of your academics and communicate openly with your professors and coaches about your schedule.

Finally, take a campus tour if you can and chat with current athletes, to get a concrete feel for the support system in place. Good luck on your track journey and with your college search!
