How do I write a character reference letter for my college apps?

I need to submit a character reference letter with some of my college applications but I'm not sure what to include. Has anyone here written one before? What did you highlight about yourself, and who did you ask to write it?

While you won't be writing your own character reference letter, understanding what goes into one can help you select the right person to ask. It's key to choose someone who knows you well and can speak to your personal qualities, not just academics or achievements. Think beyond teachers and consider coaches, employers, or leaders of community organizations you've worked with.

The letter should highlight qualities like reliability, integrity, leadership, or teamwork. Ideally, the writer will provide specific examples where you've demonstrated these traits. For instance, they might discuss how you organized a community service event, showing your initiative and concern for others. If you have had any challenges that you've overcome, this can also reflect resilience, a quality colleges admire. It's best to provide your referee with a resume or list of your activities and achievements to help them write a comprehensive letter. Additionally, giving them enough time, at least a few weeks, shows respect for their schedule and ensures they have ample opportunity to craft a thoughtful letter.

Finally, remember to thank them for their time and effort—it's a big favor they're doing for you. And, if allowed by your schools, it might be wise to review your applications' requirements for these letters, as some may have specific criteria or questions they want addressed.
