Do any HBCUs have wrestling teams?

I've been wrestling for most of my life, and I want to continue in college. I'm leaning towards an HBCU for the culture and history. It's kind of a niche sport, so I'm wondering if anyone knows about the wrestling scene at HBCUs? Or where I could find more info about this?

It's fantastic to hear about your dedication to wrestling and your interest in the rich environment of HBCUs. Wrestling programs do tend to be less common at historically black colleges and universities, but there are definitely options available. For instance, Morgan State University in Maryland had a storied wrestling program, though it's important to check the current status as some programs may have changed over time.

In terms of finding more information, I recommend starting by visiting the athletic department webpages of the HBCUs you're interested in. They usually list their sports teams, and you can find contacts there to inquire about wrestling. Additionally, reaching out directly to coaches can be a smart move—they can give you insight into the program and possibly invite you for a visit or a tryout. If an HBCU doesn't have a wrestling team, they may still have club options or affiliations with local wrestling organizations.

Another useful approach could be to connect with current students or alumni through social media or wrestling forums. They can offer firsthand experience and even networking opportunities. I encourage you to also explore broader collegiate wrestling organizations, like the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), which might help guide you to HBCUs with wrestling programs. Best of luck in your search, and I hope you find an excellent program that fits your academic and athletic aspirations.
