Can submitting supplemental materials to Cornell make a difference in my application?

I've got a bunch of extracurricular projects and I'm wondering if submitting supplemental materials, like a portfolio, to Cornell can actually tip the scales in my favor. Has anyone done this and feels it gave them an edge? Are there specific types of materials they're more interested in?

Absolutely, supplemental materials can play a significant role in your application to Cornell, especially if they are relevant to your intended major and showcase your particular set of skills and achievements.

For instance, if you're applying to the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning, your portfolio is a fundamental part of the application. For other disciplines, if you have work that demonstrates extraordinary talent or a high level of research or project development, it's worth inquiring with the admissions office if they accept supplements and what the guidelines are. Every piece of supplemental material should add a new dimension to your application that isn't already represented elsewhere.

Remember though, it's crucial to follow Cornell's submission guidelines to the letter, as unsolicited materials or information sent outside of their parameters may be disregarded. If you're in doubt, reach out directly to the admissions office for guidance. I've guided students who have submitted everything from research papers to coding projects, and those who've submitted uniquely impactful supplements often feel it strengthened their applications, as long as the work was highly polished and relevant.
