Should I Take the PSAT 8/9?

Hi all, as a freshman, I've been offered the chance to take the PSAT 8/9. Will taking it this early offer any real benefits or preparation for future standardized tests? Does it influence my college admissions profile in any way?

Hello there! As a high school counselor, I see many freshmen consider taking the PSAT 8/9, and it's a great opportunity to start getting comfortable with the format of standardized tests. While your scores on the PSAT 8/9 won't be part of your college admissions profile, the experience you gain can be quite valuable. It can help you identify areas you might need to focus on in preparation for the PSAT/NMSQT and ultimately the SAT.

Remember, the PSAT/NMSQT, typically taken during your junior year, is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, so practicing early with the PSAT 8/9 could give you a head start towards being competitive for that program.

Additionally, familiarizing yourself with test-taking skills early on can alleviate some of the stress associated with these exams. It’s a low-stakes way to see how you perform in a timed test environment. Plus, you'll get feedback on your strengths and areas to improve, which is always helpful.
