Popular High School Musicals

Just out of curiosity, what's everyone's high school musical choice? What are the most commonly performed high school musicals? Might be able to convince our music teacher to consider some new ones!

There are several musicals that have proven to be popular with high school theater programs over the years. These can be great choices because they often have larger cast sizes that allow for many students to get involved, and the themes are often relevant to high school students.

One frequent choice I've seen is "Grease", perhaps because of its fun, 1950s high school setting and memorable songs. "Little Shop of Horrors" and "Into the Woods" are also often chosen due to their mix of darker elements with some lighthearted moments and rich musical scores.

"Guys and Dolls" and "Fiddler on the Roof" are classics that get performed often, and they can provide a great opportunity for students to dive into different time periods and cultures. "The Addams Family" and "Shrek: The Musical" are well-loved for their comedic elements and familiar characters.

Of course, the choice of musical should also reflect your theater department’s strength. If you have more girls interested than boys, for example, something like "Little Women: The Broadway Musical" may be more suitable. If your students excel in dancing, a dance-heavy show like "West Side Story" may be a good fit.

It's also important to consider the resources your school has when choosing a musical. Does your school have the budget for elaborate sets and costumes, or should you opt for a show with simpler scenery and dress? Do you have students who can handle challenging vocal parts, or should you opt for a show known for its easier score?

The key is to choose a musical that will highlight your school's talent and provide a fulfilling and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
