Typical College Course Requirements?

Hi there! I'm starting to look into different colleges, and I'm curious about general admissions requirements. What courses do most insist that you take during high school, if any? Are there typical prerequisites?

Most U.S. colleges, particularly four-year institutions, will require that high school applicants have taken courses in a number of core academic areas. To be on the safe side, it's beneficial to take the following courses:

1. English: Four years of study in English language and literature.

2. Mathematics: Three to four years of math, ideally inclusive of Algebra I and II, Geometry, and Trig or Calculus.

3. Science: Three to four years, covering subjects like Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and perhaps a more specialized course, if available.

4. Social Studies: Three to four years, including U.S. History, World History, Government, and/or Economics.

5. Foreign Language: Two to three years of study in the same foreign language, though some competitive colleges might prefer four years.

Beyond this, colleges often encourage or require additional years of study in elective classes, such as arts, music, or additional science or languages.

However, the exact requirements can vary by institution. Some universities might have very specific course requirements that must be met in order to be considered for admission. For example, engineering or pre-med programs might have extra prerequisites. So, it's always recommended to check with each individual institution to ensure you meet their specific requirements.

Keep in mind that competitive colleges are looking for applicants who challenge themselves academically. If your high school offers Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or dual enrollment options, taking these rigorous courses can further demonstrate your academic strength. But remember, just taking difficult classes isn't enough – earning solid grades in them is also crucial.
