How can I improve on SAT math word problems?

Math’s not my strongest suit, especially when it comes to word problems on the SAT. Any strategies or resources you guys recommend for tackling them? How do you break down the question to figure out what it’s really asking? I want to get better at these since they seem to trip me up more than anything else.

Understanding that word problems can be a stumbling block is already a great first step in overcoming them. A helpful strategy I recommend to students is the 'identify, relate, translate, and solve' approach.

First, carefully read the problem to identify what it's asking. Next, relate the words to math expressions or equations—oftentimes creating a simple chart or drawing can help visualize the information given. Then, translate the words into a solvable math problem, being careful with the language used; the SAT often includes 'trick' words to test your comprehension.

Finally, solve the problem, ensuring you’ve addressed all parts of the question. Practice is key, so I encourage you to check out resources such as the College Board's official SAT practice, Khan Academy, or pick up an SAT prep book specifically targeted at math word problems. These resources often provide step-by-step explanations for each problem. Start by walking through problems without timing yourself and, as you become more confident, simulate test conditions by timing your practice. Most importantly, stay persistent; improvement comes with practice and time.
