Functional SPED Classes in High School

My little brother is entering high school and he has special needs. I want to help him transition smoothly. For those who have experience, what classes have you found to have the most practical applications for students with special needs?

For students with special needs, functional classes that teach practical life skills can be incredibly beneficial. These "Functional Life Skills" classes often cover areas related to self-care, social skills, domestic skills, and job skills.

For instance, self-care classes may instruct students on personal hygiene and grooming, while social skills classes can help students navigate how to interact appropriately in various social situations, understand social cues, and become more confident in public settings.

Cooking classes are a great example of functional domestic skill classes. They not only provide students with basic culinary skills, but also can help reinforce concepts like measuring, budgeting, and time management.

In terms of job skills, classes that provide hands-on training in different vocations can provide students with applicable skills that translate directly to potential job opportunities. For example, classes might focus on horticulture, farming, carpentry, or office management.

Remember, everyone has unique needs and skills, and this should be considered when selecting appropriate classes.
