New College Students: What Surprises Await?

As someone about to make the big step from high school to college, I was just wondering - what is the element most new college students find surprising or unexpected? Would love to hear thoughts from current or past college students about this!

In my experience, many new college students often find the degree of personal responsibility associated with managing their time and academic priorities surprising. Unlike high school, where you have someone checking your homework every day, making sure you're in class on time, etc., in college, you're responsible for your schedule and deadlines.

You're also responsible for your own safeguarding, eating healthy, and conducting your own chores. The dining hall is not open 24 hours, and, unfortunately, clothes don't wash themselves. And finally, always be prepared for the dynamics of sharing your living space with others. Communication is key in these situations, to ensure everyone lives comfortably.

Moreover, college life isn't all about the academics. The diversity and breadth of extracurricular activities might surprise you initially. And that array of activities, clubs, and societies is your playground to explore and develop new skills or interests outside the academic space. Just ensure you strike a balance and don't overwhelm yourself.

Just remember, it's okay to feel a bit overwhelmed; it's a big transition! Seek guidance from peers, professors, academic advisors, and even mental health professionals if needed. It generally takes a while to familiarize yourself and establish a routine, but once you do, college can become an incredibly rewarding and enriching experience.
