What are the most effective models for online high school courses?

My school is refining our online learning system. For those of you who've had a positive experience with online learning, what model was your school using?

Several models have been proven effective in online high school courses.

One common approach is the Asynchronous Learning model, where students access materials, lectures, assignments, and tests on their own time, meaning there's no set time for class. This provides flexibility for students, allowing them to complete work when it fits into their schedule. This model usually features pre-recorded lectures, message boards, email communication, online quizzes, and assignments.

The Synchronous Learning model is another effective approach, where classes occur in real time on a set schedule. The students and the teacher gather at the same time and interact through platforms such as Zoom or Google Meet. Students benefit from live discussions and immediate feedback.

A third approach is the Hybrid model, combining elements from both asynchronous and synchronous learning. It gives students a real-time interaction advantage while also offering flexibility.

Finally, the Flipped Classroom model is another effective method where students learn new content online by watching video lectures, usually at home, and what used to be homework (assigned problems) is now done in class with teachers offering guidance and answering questions.

The most effective model can depend on the nature of the course, the student's learning preferences, and the resources available to the school. For example, the asynchronous model works well for self-paced courses, while the synchronous model is better suited for classes that include a lot of discussion and collaboration. A mixture of each, the Hybrid model, can offer the best of both worlds. Remember, though, that whatever model you use, needs to be accompanied by a reliable technology platform, clear communication from teachers, and support for students as they navigate learning in a new format.
