Most Commonly Dropped College Course

While putting together my potential college schedule, I'm curious - is there a notorious class or subject in college that students frequently drop? I just want to be aware of any potential difficult classes.

Certainly, it's beneficial to keep an open mind and not let others' experiences entirely dictate your academic choices, but it's also smart to be prepared. In many colleges, Organic Chemistry (often listed as CHEM 210 or CHEM 220) tends to have a high drop-out rate.

A big reason for its reputation as a weed-out course is that it's a prerequisite for many pre-professional health programs like medicine, pharmacy, and more, causing a majority of students to take this challenging course. Organic Chemistry requires a strong foundation in basic chemistry and a lot of time commitment to understand the concepts and mechanisms thoroughly.

Another class that many students find challenging is calculus, especially for those not specializing in a mathematics-related field. Calculus often involves complex concepts and abstract thinking, thus requiring focused study and practice.

Keep in mind that everyone's academic strengths and interests differ. You may find yourself excelling at these so-called 'difficult' classes while struggling in others that are deemed 'easier.' It all comes down to your background knowledge, determination, study habits, and passion for the subject. Even for notoriously difficult classes, you can succeed by taking advantage of resources such as professor office hours, forming study groups, and utilizing tutoring centers.
