What degrees should I consider if I want to go into game development?

Hey peeps, I've been coding games as a hobby and I love it. I want to turn this into a career. Anyone know what kinds of degrees would be good for getting into the game development industry? Does it have to be Comp Sci or are there other options?

Hey! It's awesome that you've found a passion in game development! Computer Science is indeed a very traditional path for aspiring game developers as it provides a solid foundation in software development principles. However, there are other degree options as well.

Many universities offer specific degrees in Game Design and Development, which combine computer programming skills with storytelling and graphic design. Additionally, degrees in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, and even Graphic Design or Animation can be relevant, particularly if paired with coding experience.

The question of what degree to pursue also depends on which aspect of game development interests you the most—programming, design, art, or maybe even audio. I'd recommend researching programs that offer a curriculum aligned with your specific interests within game development. This might include courses in 3D modeling, artificial intelligence, or user interface design, for example.

Make sure to also consider the career support services and alumni network of the programs you are looking into, as these can be quite valuable when you start looking for a job in the industry. Best of luck!
