Marrying Within Your Major - Any Data Out There?

Okay so oddball question but I figure why not - I read somewhere that certain college majors are more likely to end up marrying each other. I'm curious as to whether this is actually true and if so, which majors? Like, do engineers typically end up with other engineers, or does opposites attracting hold more weight?

Research on college majors and marriage patterns does suggest that some majors are more likely to marry others within the same discipline. This could be due to several reasons: shared interests, spending a significant amount of time together, or even just understanding each other's work.

A study by Dan Kopf of the data site Priceonomics dug into this using data from the U.S. census. According to their analysis, some majors indeed exhibit a higher tendency to marry within their discipline. For instance, they found out that 'business' majors don't typically marry each other but tend to pair with 'no degree,' 'high school diploma,' or 'some college.' On the other hand, 'music' majors are more likely to tie the knot with each other than with those in other fields. The study found similar patterns among 'theology' majors and 'library science' majors.

Though 'engineering' majors might often end up with other engineers due to the high proportion of this major in the workforce, the study showed that female engineers tend to marry male engineers but male engineers are more likely to couple with a female teaching major or female 'no degree.'

However, it’s important to note that these patterns don’t reflect every couple and there is still a great variety of matches! End of the day, it's not about the major you choose but the person you are and become. Personal compatibility, shared life goals, mutual respect, love, and understanding hold a lot more weight when it comes to successful relationships.
