Required SAT scores for colleges?

Hi everyone, kinda stressed out junior here. Does anyone know what SAT score is typically required by most colleges? Can't seem to shake the SAT stress. Thanks in advance, peeps!

Hello! The required SAT score can differ significantly for each college, and some colleges may not require you to submit test scores at all. Generally, though, the range of SAT scores is from 400 to 1600.

In terms of moving your application forward, schools often use an Academic Index – a number that encapsulates your academic performance quantitatively. It takes into consideration your grades, class rank (if available), and standardized test scores (if available). If this Index is too low, your application may not be reviewed in detail. There's no published cut-off rate, but you can get a sense of the range by looking at the 25th–75th percentile scores of admitted students for the college you're interested in.

Some colleges also have "benchmark" scores. For example, to gain admission, some colleges may require an SAT Math score of 530 or higher. But again, these vary greatly among colleges.

Remember, SAT scores are becoming less important with the move toward test-optional policies. For example, for the 2024-2025 application cycle, colleges like Columbia University, Princeton University, Stanford University, University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins University, New York University, and the University of Chicago have chosen to stay test-optional, so students are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores.

It's also important to note that as of 2024, the SAT has changed its format and become fully digital with a redesigned structure. It might be a good idea to get acquainted with this new format to alleviate some of your stress.

Remember to focus not just on your SAT scores, but also on crafting compelling essays, engaging in impactful extracurricular activities, and acquiring solid letters of recommendation. Admissions decisions are based on a combination of these factors, not just test scores. Good luck with your preparations!
