How do HBCU grad programs in social work compare?

Hey everyone, I’m currently a junior and starting to look at the bigger picture for grad school. I’m super interested in social work, and I’ve read that HBCUs can offer a unique perspective and strong community support in their programs. Can anybody share their experiences or knowledge about the strength of HBCU master’s programs in social work?

Hey there! It's heartening to see you exploring your options for grad school. Students at these HBCU social work graduate programs often mention that the curriculum not only focuses on the general principles of social work, but also incorporates discussions around social justice, community empowerment, and cultural competency, which are incredibly important in this field.

The faculty are generally very supportive and have a wealth of experience working with diverse communities, which greatly enriches the learning experience of students. Additionally, students can build a strong network with their peers, which can be beneficial in their future career.

If you're considering these aspects, I'd say HBCUs could be a great fit for you. It might also be a good idea to reach out to alumni or current students of these programs, as they can give you firsthand insights. Best of luck with your decision and future studies!
