Joining clubs or doing intramurals? Which is better for college apps?

Okay, so I've got limited time outside of classes, and I need to choose between clubs or intramurals for my extracurriculars. Which looks better to colleges? I like both, but I really wanna boost my app. Thoughts?

From a strategic standpoint, you'll want to consider how your activities align with your overall application narrative. If you have a particular interest or academic path you're passionate about, joining clubs related to that field can help to develop your 'spike'—that deep and exceptional interest or talent in a particular area.

Colleges appreciate seeing dedication and initiative in a field that's meaningful to you. For example, if you're aiming toward a STEM major, joining the robotics club would align nicely with your goals.

Intramurals, on the other hand, can be great if you are looking to show teamwork, leadership, and commitment over time, especially if you take on a captain role. They don't usually carry the same weight as varsity sports, but they're still a valid way to demonstrate your interests and character.

Remember, what matters most is your level of engagement and what you learn or achieve through your participation. Whether it's a leadership position in a club or organizing and leading an intramural team, showing initiative and impact is key. Therefore, I'd suggest focusing more on what you can contribute and the roles you take on rather than the type of activity itself.
