How do HBCU merit scholarships work?

Hey folks, I'm strongly considering applying to an HBCU for college, and I've heard a bit about merit scholarships they offer. But how do they actually work? Do all HBCUs have them, and what kind of grades and test scores are usually needed to be a competitive applicant for these scholarships? Also, is there anything specific I should be doing now as a junior to improve my chances of getting one of these scholarships? Super curious and a bit stressed about finances, so any info would be much appreciated!

Hi there! It's really positive that you're finding ways to fund your education early on. Most HBCUs offer merit scholarships aiming to attract high-achieving students, and these can vary from partial to full tuition. The criteria can differ by institution, but typically, they consider a combination of your GPA, SAT/ACT scores, class rank, and often leadership or community involvement. For instance, some scholarships start at a certain GPA threshold (like 3.5) and standardized test score minimum – but they’re different for each school and each scholarship offered.

As a junior, focus on maintaining or improving your GPA and getting the best scores possible if you haven't taken your SAT or ACT yet. Additionally, consider taking on leadership roles in extracurricular activities, as demonstrated leadership can strengthen your application. If test prep is on your mind, start early and consider resources available to you, whether through your school or online. Remember to research each HBCU’s specific requirements for their merit scholarships as soon as possible, so you can tailor your efforts accordingly. Last but not least, don’t hesitate to reach out to the financial aid offices of the HBCUs you're interested in – they can offer the most specific and helpful guidance for their scholarships. Best of luck!
