College Courses for Visually Impaired

Hey everyone, I'm a visually impaired student and I've been thinking a lot about college. Just curious, are there any specific courses or areas of study that other visually impaired people typically go for?

Your interest in college and continued learning is admirable! What you study will largely depend on your interests and career goals. There isn't a set path for visually impaired students, and there are assistance and support resources to help visually impaired students succeed in any academic area they decide to pursue.

That being said, there are certain fields where visually impaired individuals have particularly excelled. These would include fields like law, psychology, counseling, social work, computer science, and various areas within arts and humanities, just to give an example.

For instance, computer science is a field where being visually impaired does not necessarily put one at a disadvantage. Many software applications and tools exist that can help visually impaired coders. In fact, coding mainly involves understanding algorithms and logical structures, which doesn't necessarily require visual perception.

Likewise, fields like psychology, counseling, and social work are all about understanding people and helping them navigate life's challenges. These fields require listening skills, empathy, and understanding, all of which aren't necessarily impacted by visual impairment.

Remember, success in college and beyond isn't determined by one's physical abilities but rather by their determination, perseverance, and passion. As a visually impaired student, you can access supports such as Braille materials, audio texts, and other assistive technology to make your journey easier. Make sure to explore resources for visually impaired students available at the colleges you're interested in, whether that's special accommodations, tech support, or counselors familiar with your needs!

Regardless of the field you choose, remember that what's most important is your interest and enjoyment of the subject.
