Overcoming Negative Attitudes Towards College

So, I've noticed that I have some negative feelings towards going to college, and it's not about the academics, but more about the whole experience. Either way, I want to understand...Does anyone else feel like this? How can we change our outlook?

While it's perfectly normal for people to have ambivalent feelings about going away to college, these feelings are typically a mix of fear, anxiety, excitement, and anticipation. It's a big transition period in one's life, after all. It sounds like you are experiencing more negative than positive feelings though.

You're likely not alone in these feelings. Many students can experience fear of change or fear of the unknown in regards to college. First, it's good to narrow down what you're feeling anxious about. Is it concerns about living away from home, making new friends, or something else?

Secondly, be open to the idea that while college is a significant change, it's also an opportunity for growth and development. Look for the positives and what it can offer – it's not just about academics, but also about personal development, making lifelong friends, and having unique experiences you might not have elsewhere.

Finally, it could be beneficial to talk to somebody like a counselor, mentor, older sibling or friend who's gone to college. They can share their real-life experiences, and who knows, your outlook might change after hearing about their ups and downs. College isn't a one-size-fits-all experience, and people's perspectives can vary, so hearing from different people can give you a more balanced view.

As for how to change your outlook, one thing that could help is getting more information about colleges in general. The more you know about what to expect from college life, the less daunting it may become. Also, try to set realistic expectations. Recognize that, just like any other phase of life, college will have its highs and lows.

Lastly, remember that while college is an important step, it's not the only path to success. You might want to explore other options, like community college, trade school, or entering the workforce directly, that might better align with your feelings and long term career goals.
