Understanding Football Divisions

Hey there! Sporty student here with a query😊. I've been hearing about the national championships and the representation of different divisions in college football. I get a little confused about which division actually holds the record for the most national championships so far. Do you guys know which division has managed to bag the most championships? Thanks for the help!

Hello! It's great that you're showing interest in college football. To answer your question, Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), previously known as Division I-A has so far seen the most national championships awarded. This is largely due to the number of universities competing in the subdivision (about 130), and the level of competition, as well as the duration of the subdivision's existence.

The Division I FBS has the College Football Playoff, where the top four teams (selected by a Committee) at the end of the regular season compete for the national championship. Much of the historical data is seen with FBS because the subdivision has been around for a long time with many prestigious programs like Alabama, Notre Dame, LSU, Clemson, etc., contributing to its rich history of championships.

Bear in mind, the manner in which championships are determined has evolved over time, with different methods and organizations used to determine national championships before the establishment of the College Football Playoff in the 2014 season. I hope this helps! Happy watching!
