What makes a high school in Queens, NY competitive?

I live in Queens, NY, and I'm starting to think about where I want to go to high school. I know the term 'competitive' gets thrown around a lot, but what exactly does it mean in the context of Queens high schools, and which schools are considered to be the most competitive? I'm mostly interested in academic criteria, but I'd also love to hear about extracurriculars. Thanks in advance!

In the context of high schools, "competitive" typically refers to schools that boast strong academic programs, diverse extracurricular offerings, and a track record of students proceeding to well-respected colleges or achieving accomplishments in various fields.

Academic rigor is often a great indicator of a competitive school. This can be determined by:

1. The number of Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses offered.

2. How many students proceed to post-secondary education and where they're accepted.

3. Average standardized test scores, such as SAT scores.

However, keep in mind that New York State now reviews a broader range of performance indicators for schools, which includes, but is not limited to, test scores and graduation rates. It encompasses other factors such as progress for English language learners, chronic absenteeism rates, and more.

As for extracurricular activities, schools that offer a multitude of clubs, sports, and arts options are often considered more competitive. The quality of these activities matters too; accomplishing high-level feats like winning statewide competitions or participating in prestigious events could elevate a school's competitiveness.

In Queens, for instance, Townsend Harris High School at Queens College often ranks highly due its rigorous academic program, and the fact that it sends many of its graduates to top-tier universities. Other competitive high schools in Queens include Queens High School for the Sciences at York College and Stuyvesant High School, both of which are specialized high schools known for their STEM-focused curriculum.

That being said, remember that a competitive high school isn't always the best fit for everyone. Don't undervalue the importance of a supportive environment and considering what you want from your high school experience, beyond academics and resume-building.
