How have the costs of high schools changed over time?

I've been trying to understand why some high schools are so expensive, like some of the 'most expensive' ones in the U.S. I came across old data from 2014, and it made me think: how have these costs changed over the years? Are these schools getting even more expensive?

Indeed, tuition at private high schools has generally increased over time. A variety of factors contribute to this, including the need to attract and retain quality teachers, provide adequate facilities and resources, and meet increased demands for specialized programs and extracurricular activities. Furthermore, the cost of private schooling often includes aspects like technology, support services, and smaller class sizes which public schools may not offer.

It's also worth noting that increases in tuition do not necessarily reflect a proportionate increase in the quality of education. While certain private institutions may offer additional resources or programs that are factored into the cost, the steep price tag also reflects the school's prestige and the socioeconomic status of the student body. The exclusive nature of the school could make it seem more desirable to some families, allowing the institutions to further hike their fees.

However, keep in mind that many private and expensive high schools offer financial aid packages and scholarships to families who can't afford the full tuition, making them more accessible than their sticker prices might suggest. In some cases, the total out-of-pocket cost for families may have remained relatively unchanged due to these aid packages, even as the sticker price has risen.

For comparison's sake, it can be helpful to look into public high schools, which are funded by tax dollars and thus free to attend for residents of the district. Despite varying levels of funding, these schools must adhere to certain standards set by the state and federal government, offering a quality education without an associated tuition cost. However, costs associated with extracurricular activities, school trips, and other non-mandatory programs may still apply.

While examining the cost trends can provide useful context, remember that the most important factor in choosing a school should be fit—how well the school's offerings align with a student's interests, values, and academic goals.
