Most pretentious majors in college?

Sort of a different question, but I've been hearing all sorts of gossip and rumors about some majors being more 'pretentious' than others. What have you guys heard? Which majors tend to have this reputation and why?

In terms of "pretentiousness," it's important to remember that the perceived arrogance or pretension often comes more from individuals than from an entire major. However, certain majors can attract specific types of students or foster certain environments, leading to stereotypes.

1. Philosophy: Philosophy students sometimes get the reputation for being pretentious due to the abstract nature of the subject matter. This major necessitates a lot of deep and critical thinking on complex topics which might result in the students sounding a bit lofty.

2. Film Studies: Film majors are sometimes considered pretentious because of the nature of critique involved in the study. Analyzing and critiquing movie can stir students towards "high-brow" cinema, sometimes overshadowing appreciation for mainstream or popular films.

3. Fine Arts: There's a stereotype of fine arts students as being pretentious or eccentric because this field often involves creating and critiquing unique, subjective works. The principle of beauty being in the eye of the beholder can cause disagreements in this major leading to perceived "snobbishness" but it's really just a difference of opinions.

4. Finance and Business: Business and finance majors, especially those from high-ranking schools, can often get a reputation for being pretentious due to their high career ambitions and sometimes cutthroat competition.

5. Literature: Similar to philosophy and film studies, literature students often have in-depth analyses of texts that can sound a bit high-flung to those not familiar with the field.

But remember, these are all stereotypes! Anyone can be pretentious, no matter what subject they study or what field they work in. It ultimately depends on the individual's personality, not their major.
